Ovarian Cysts: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment

Complex Ovarian Cysts

There is quite a number  women who do suffer great pain from complex ovarian cysts. The next question they would ask could be simple "why". Therefore, let's take look what complex ovarian cysts are all about.

Overlook Complex Ovarian Cysts

What is a Complex Ovarian Cyst Mass?

  • Complex cysts include solid components in addition to fluid
  • There are three types of complex ovarian cysts:
    - Cysts that are formed from egg cells are dermoid cysts
    -Endometriosis causes endometrioma cysts
-Cysts formed from ovarian tissue are cystadenomas

How to Tell if your Ovarian Cyst Is Complex?

  • Your physician will do a manual pelvic examination
  • An ultrasound can confirm your doctor’s diagnosis
  • A trans vaginal ultrasound may be done
  • Symptoms may be similar to pregnancy and endometriosis, tests are done to rule these out
  • A CA 125 blood test is conducted to test for endometriomas and cancer
  • Complex ovarian cysts generally do not break down on their own

Is a Complex Ovarian Cyst Dangerous?

  • Complex ovarian cysts can be fatal if they are not treated
  • Complex ovarian cysts may be cancerous

Pain from Complex Ovarian Cysts

  • Enlarged cystedonomas can cause the ovary to twist which is extremely painful
  • Pain may radiate from the pelvis to thighs and buttocks
  • There may be pain with sexual intercourse
  • Pain may occur before or after menstrual periods

Pathophysiology of Complex Ovarian Cyst

  • A complex ovarian cyst contains solid and fluid components
  • Irregular borders may be present in complex ovarian cysts
  • Ultrasound may show hair strands
  • Complex ovarian cyst septa may be present, these are internal walls which create separate spaces within the cyst

Ovarian Complex Cyst Versus Solid Mass

  • Solid masses may be fibromas, granulosa cell tumor, and Brenner tumors
  • A fibroma is a benign tumor composed of fibrous or connective tissue
  • Granulosa cell tumors are composed of granulosa cells, theca cells and fibroblasts, and often produce estrogen
  • Brenner tumors are solid, and contain epithelial cells and fibrous connective tissue
  • Ovarian complex cysts look different in ultrasound tests than other masses.

Complex Ovarian Cysts and MRI

  • An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is more accurate than a pelvic ultrasound in identifying hemorrhagic cysts and endometriomas
  • Ultrasound may not show the difference between solid tumors, complex ovarian cysts and mature cystic teratomas.

I am 49 will be 50 next month. I have been told that I have a cyst on my left ovary with solid components. I am sick with worry. It was discovered by ultrasound. I now have to go for MRI and had a CA125 test done today.

I just turned 40 two weeks ago and was told that i have a complex cyst on my left ovary. I was taken into hospital yesterday to have it removed through keyhole surgery which was unsuccessful. Now i have to have to wait another couple of weeks to have it removed through an insertion. I have had many cysts on my ovaries and i lost my right ovary 8 years ago cause the cyst was so big. I am worried about this one but hopefully all will go well.

I too just turned 40 and had went for my annual papsmear. I had been having some painful periods that had been going on for about a year and half. I was discussing with my dr about having an ablation done, so he had sent me for bloodwork and an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed I had a 1.7cm complex cyst on my left ovary. My doctor wants me to come back in 6wks for another ultrasound. I have worried myself sick. I’m not sure I can wait the 6wks. I would like to just have it removed and tested instead of the wait and see approach.

I was also just diagnosed at age 40 (almost 41) with a complex ovarian cyst on my left ovary. Also worried sick and can not even get in to see an OB-Gyn as mine moved this summer and I am now a new patient in a different practice. My appt is 2 weeks away and they would not give me one sooner despite my ultrasound report ordered by my reg Dr. I hope all goes well for others here.

People-Don’t take that! Insist you be seen earlier! Tell them the pain is worsening and becoming unbearable. Lie if you have to in order to get in faster. I did it. The followups tests to the complex cyst they found in my right ovary were initially schedeuled for 2 weeks out. Now I’m being seen tomorrow. I lied-told them I was in worsening pain that was becoming unbearable. I have the worst insurance of all-Kaiser-but it worked. They originally had me waiting 2 weeks to come in. Ovarian cancer spreads fast-within months from what I’ve read. Don’t accept the wait they’ve given you!!!

  8. Heather says:

I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst a couple of weeks ago-then it just snowballed from there. First they told me I have a 4.7 cm cyst on my left ovary. Then it’s diagnosed as complex, and have bad endo. THEN I find out they’re going to take the whole left ovary out. Tommorow.

I am having a 2 level spinal fusion done on next Thursday, which involves 2 months in bed and 3 in collar. I was terrified of being in this much pain during that recovery period.

I talked to my (brand new) gyno about my concerns and he told me he could get the surgery done right away, which is tommorrow. I don’t know if he’s Just trying to help me out or if he’s concerned it won’t wait till after I recover from my neck surgery. Probably a little of both. And it looks like I’m going to have everything else out when I am done recovering.
I am very grateful to have found a Dr. who was willing to listen to me and is confident that he can help me in time for the neck operation.

However- I am TERRIFIED that I may not recover from the first operation quickly and sufficiently enough to proceed with the second procedure :P . I trust this dr. and, but this is sorta of a big deal-I’ve been on Morphine for the last 5 years waiting to get this neck problem taken care of. I have been in a great deal of pain lately and can’t take any med cause of prep for both operations, and I’m more than a little freaked out right now. And I refuse to think about the cysts returning malignant. I know it’s a possibility, but considering what’s already on my plate, I’m just going to be optimistic on this one and deal with it If it happens

I’ve received some wonderful advice for my recovery from the neck operation, but I was hoping I could get some advice more specifically related to the oophorectomy recovery.

Thanks for listening and sincerely hope everyone else is doing ok

    @Heather
Thank you for sharing your story Heather. I am so sorry that you are going through such a rough time right now.
The only advice I feel comfortable giving you (since I am not a physician) Is to make sure that you get all of the information that you can. Find out all that you can before you do something that you feel uneasy about. It your body.
Thanks Again and Good Luck. :-)

I am 41 and had one ovary removed about a year ago due to a simple cyst (I have had one or more removed every 4-7 years since I was in my early twenty’s). They are always simple cysts that just get really big and hurt. Never any concern about cancer on them.

A few weeks ago, I found out that the cyst they saw in April on my right ovary has grown to about 3 inches across and is a septated complex cyst. I had a CAT scan where I passed out from the pain and an ultrasound. The pain has been unbearable. I was put on pain meds and those eventually made me even sicker because this thing is sitting on my bladder and the meds dehydrate you further.

I told my doctor I wanted to see an ob/gyn right away. She couldn’t get me in to see anyone until tomorrow. This has been the longest three weeks. I can’t take anything. Even Aleve eats my stomach lining away and gives me bleeding ulcers. I have called multiple times to get in sooner and have been told there just are no openings.

I am quite certain this thing is growing because it feels even bigger than before and is hitting so many internal organs. The pain makes it hard to sleep. When I do sleep, I have dreams of being punched, pinched and shot at in the abdomen.

With everything I’ve read about these kinds of cysts, you would think they would try to address it sooner. I want my life back. I am planning my wedding for 6 months from now and this makes it hard to enjoy anything.

I am 31 and was just diagnosed with a complex cyst early in the morning on Tuesday 3/9/10 in the ER.
My husband and I had been fooling around (without any problems, I might add) and when we finished, it was THE worst pain I’ve ever experienced! I was rolled in a ball and crying my head off. It almost felt like gas, ya know, kinda moving around a little. I mean it was always in the same spot, but sometimes it ratiated into my back, and sometimes clear down into my thighs. At one point my fingers even went completely numb. I would try to move, to see if a different position would make it better, but it only hurt worse. Finall, my husband said “That’s enough, you need to go to the ER!” I agreed, and he took me out to the living room. It felt like I was giving birth to twins at the same time! The pain on my cervex was excruciating!
Anyways, he went to get the car, and left me sitting on the sofa. Next thing I know, I’m waking up, and my 10 year old daughter is kneeling next to me, and kinda shaking me saying “Mom! Mom! Are you ok? Mom!?” My husband then called 911. By the time the ambulance got there, the pain was slightly getting better.

We got to the hospital, and they ran tests, thinking that perhaps my philopian tube had twisted, but instead they found a cluster of complex cysts on my right ovary.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had cysts, but it is the first time that they’ve been complex.
But every time, they’ve been on my right side.

I have 3 kids, and have had my tubes tied. Im so sick of this! I just want it all to be over and done with NOSW!!!!!

I tried to go to work (Im a dog groomer… Not an easy job even when your feeling well) but had to rescedule my clients becuse I couldnt handle the nausea and pressure in my belly.

I also dont have insurance, so everything is gonna be paid for outta pocket, but Im applying for assitance through the state. If I cant work, Im sure I can get something.

Im glad I found this sight. It helps to hear other womens stories.

    Good luck to everyone.

    Hi,
I’m extremely worried about my 44 year old mum !$ day ago she woke me up from bed and informed me they had found a large tumor in her ovary that could be cancerous ( results from ultrasound).
She’s been through so much before this with family death e.c.t and is ringing up my lil cousin, I’m a only child – she means the world to me and I would rither be going through this right now rither than her, MY HEART IS BREAKING.
I’ve been looking on the net none stop for the last 3 days, and I keep coming up with ovarin cancer,, I’m so scared that it could be that.
I don’t mean to sound daft or go on – BUT – I would love to know a few details from other ladys who have experienced this i.e is there a hhuge chance its not cancerous even after what the doc has told her? is she gonna be ok? am I over reacting?
any feed back would be so appreciated, Lee x

  15. Ria the Deer says:

Hey Lee, I just turned 47 (mind you I don’t feel that old! LOL!) and just today I found out I have a similar thing as your mum. If they think it is cancerous by now (few weeks since your post) she would have had either the tests, CA-125, ultrasound, and possibly surgery. It is a scary time for you, but I am sure your mum is more scared that YOU are upset too!
Many of the cysts are treatable. It is a scary word ‘cancer’ but do try hard not to panic. Go with her to her appointments (if she would like you to) and learn as much as you can on the subject. Don’t forget, she needs you too!
I hope it all goes well for your mum.

I am a 17 year old girl with two complex cysts on each of my ovaries. I used to say that I didn’t want to have children but i always wanted it to be my choice whether or not I had children. I have been put on medication so that surgery would be a last option, so I hope for the best for all of us who suffer from ovarian cysts.

I am 30 and was just diagnosed with a complex cyst on my Lt ovary (via CT scan) but my symptoms sound different than the ones listed in these comments. I have some cramping but I also have bloating, nausea, constipation, and pain high in my abdomen on the right. I go in for an ultrasound latter today. We will see how this goes. My husband is in the Army and we are currently posted in South Korea so I am dealing with the language and cultural differences in the pursuit of treatment and finding answers. I have 2 sons (1yr and almost 4) who require alot of energy and I am finding it difficult.

  18. Lisa says:

I just had an ultrasound done today and also a vaginal ultrasound. The doctor said when I had an ultrasound last year by another doctor there was a simple cyst about 2.8cm which he thought that was large. Anyway he wanted to follow up on the cyst. I received a call today from the nurse and they are sending me to a obgyn since my cyst is now a complex ovarian cyst. I am very worried, since I have been complaining for over a year about my weight gain and back pains. I also am dealing with an enlarged liver and spleen and dont know if all this is connected or not. I am very worried about the cyst and dont know when I will be seen by the doctor.

I am 23…was just diagnosed with a large complex cyst that has hemorrhaged and partially ruptured…but is still 6cm by 5cm. I’m really scared my ovary will need to be removed with this. I have had one miscarriage and desperately want children…I’m fearful that I won’t be able to. I am seeing another dr on monday to decide on surgery.

I pray for all of us women with this painful problem

  20. Neiveah says:

Hi ladies, my prayers are definitely with you all and your loved ones.
I’m 33, a year ago I started having pains on my left side.
Doctor scheduled a pelvic ultrasound, saw cysts on both ovaries.
Said cysts weren’t large, seemed normal. Asked if I was having issues with constipation I said yes. Gave me prescription for it. Didn’t help me really.

Now a year later had my annual pap, as OBgyn was doing the pap, she said to the assistant, endometrisis. I informed her of me still having pain on left side. After examine she explained what endometrisis was, and asked if I had been bleeding between menstrual and after intercourse. I answered yes, she asked how long I stated about two months that I’ve noticed.

Got the results, said I have a complex cyst on my left side, but small 1.9cm.
She asked me had I been constipated I said yes, I stated I got a little relief from
Eating dried prunes. She then explained to me about coming bck in 6-8 weeks
For another pelvic to see if the cyst had decreased in size and if the fluid had gone. I asked her what do I do for the extreme pain, she asked what had I been doing, I said taking aleve and I ibuprofen as needed. She said to continue and she couldn’t prescribe anything else bcuz it may worsen my symptoms and give my cyst an adverse reaction. I can’t sleep, I’m in the worse pain ever next to child birth. I’m worried bcuz I have bloating, nausea, constipation,
Still bleeding, soreness in my buttocks even when walking.

I wanted to try for another baby after loosing my son in the
Womb while being full term, 3 yrs ago. I have two other boys
9 & 10 I heart and joy of my life. My 9 yr old seems to be a little worried.
He knew if I stay home from work I must be sick. He asked me
How my Dr. Appt. Went he asked what the doc said, he said he was worried
They told me I had cancer. I sat up in my bed, I encouraged him to think
Positive, I told him it would be ok. I mean my 9 yr old asked questions and seemed more concerned than my husband.

After talking with my 9 yr old I stated researching and pulled
Up results of possible cancer in every search. Now I’m really worried.
I’m going to the ER today, pain is too unbearable.

    She scheduled pelvic il

    Hi,
Im only 15 years old and was diagnosed with a complex cyst on my right overy. It started about 6 months ago when i started experiencing pain in my right hip. the pain never stopped so i visited the doctor. after three visits i was finally sent to a orthepedic doctor, who scanned me with an MRI. Expecting some kind of muscular mishap, i came out of his office knowing nothing more than the fact that there was a mass on my ovary. I was then sent to the local obgyn, which, only being 15, had never visited before. I was very nervous but my doctor was great. She did an ultrasound and found a Complex cyst on my right ovary. I was terrified, and even began to cry in the office. I am now scheduled to have surgery to get either the mass removed, or even my ovary removed. Although she highly doubts it is cancerous, there still is a chance. I’m keeping my head high, but find it so out of the ordinary to have this at my age. I could really use some support!, and thankyou all for your encouraging stories!

I am 27 years old and 3 years ago I was diagnosed with complex cyst on both my left and right ovaries measuring 3.9 x 2.1cm and 5.4 x 4.8cm respectively. I was put and medication and when I went back for a follow-up they had gone completely. When these things happen it makes you realise how much you really want children. So after I was given the go ahead to try getting pregnant me and my husband started immediately. Two and a half years have passed and still nothing so I decide to go by a new gyno yesterday and told him my problems and when he did the internal ultrasound I found out that I have another complex cyst measuring 8 x 6cm. I don’t know how to cope and I can’t stop crying……I don’t know if everything is going to be OK….right now I have to play the waiting game..waiting to see if the medication works

  26. Janet says:

Dear ladies, I wish you all well, good health, peace in your hearts, and happiness in your souls.

I can relate to all of your suffering, because just two days ago, I had surgery to remove a complex cyst on my left ovary. The OB/GYN was able to remove the large cyst (he said it looked like a large blue egg and it had grown to be the same size as my uterus) and the infected ovary through an endoscopic procedure, which left me with two 1″ incisions on either side of my pelvis, and one in my belly button. Amazingly, the Dr. explained to me that he inserted a baggie through the endoscopic instrument, wrapping it around the infected cyst and ovary, then smashing it within the baggie (so if it were cancerous, the cancer would be contained within the bag) and then removing the entire baggie, cyst and ovary through the small incision. They also glued my incisions closed, rather than giving me any stitches to be removed. It’s incredible what medical treatments are available today! And, I don’t have any medical insurance, either! I had to pay cash – they demanded a check prior to the operation (the hospital’s fee was a whopping $7500, while my Dr’s charge was only $1500) – out of my own pocket! I also have been experiencing extraordinary pain in my lower abdomen (it constantly feels like I have a bladder infection) and kidney area of my lower back, and I am looking forward to the pain residing as I continue to heal. I am already back at work, I think coping pretty well, as most people have no clue I just had surgery. In a couple of weeks, I should receive the pathological results to find out if it was cancerous, but gratefully, my physician didn’t think it was.

I am approaching 51 years of age, and have had numerous cysts in the past, so I’ve learned that MANY women get these things, and most times they recede and dissolve on their own without complications.

Think positive. Take good care of your-self. Try not to dwell on negativity or worry. And remember, there is NOTHING to fear, but fear itself.

    God bless you all.

I am 25 years old with a complex cyst on my left ovary. This page, with all the in put from so many other women, has given me a renewed strength, and a calmness of the mind. No one else knows the pain, pressure, stress, and everything else that goes on with this. I have had to take days off from work because of the pain. I go in later today for a second ultrasound. In the first, the cyst was only 1.7cm. It caused me discomfort then, and now, almost 9 weeks later, I have experienced more pain than I can stand to have. I miss making love to my fiance! I just want my life back! Thank you ladies!

**A favor to ask** if any previous posters get this, would you mind posting a follow-up and letting us know how everything turned out???
And any future posters – in addition to your comments now (I am sure we are all doing the same thing – Googling complex ovarian cysts, gathering info, getting worried then getting on with it), will you try to remember to post follow-ups?
Thanks, everyone – I will try to remember to follow up myself.

    I am 46 years old.

Went to my OB/BGYN on Feb 16, 2011 for a complaint of bleeding while having sex and she recommended an ultrasound and results came back that I have a 4.7 cm complex cyst on my left ovary and my right ovary is clear. Did the blood work and that came back normal.

Had outpatient surgery to take a tissue sample of my uterus and that came back normal.

Went back on April 6, 2011 for another ultrasound and now the complex cyst has grown to 5.0 cm in the left ovary and a 1.2 cm has been noticed in the right ovary.

Having surgery May 9th to take care of the complex cyst in the left ovary, hoping it will be laposcopy (sp?) and will be outpatient surgery.

I have never had outpatient surgery in a hospital before and I am a little scared and over thinking it. I have never had children and any type of major surgery before.

Question – does being over weight play a part on the type of surgery you have?

    Hi,
Last Saturday (May 21st) I was leaving the Oregon Zoo when all of a sudden I felt pain in my lower abdomen. It worsened to the point where I could not walk and so my husband drove me to ER. The CT scan showed a cyst 2.2 centimeters. I had a follow up pelvic examination and ultrasound Tuesday and the results were that the cyst contained debris. I’m assuming from what I’ve googled that this is referred to as a complex cyst. My ob/gyn wants to give a pelvic examination and another ultrasound this Tuesday the 31st May. I’ve been worried sick and trying to be positive at the same time. My husband and I have two beautiful children and although I’m in some discomfort I feel I am going to demand tests to rule out cancer, because ovarian cancer I believe spreads quickly and statistics are not good for survival rate if not diagnosed early on. I am 43 and have never had cysts before. My period is still regular and came on 2 days ago. My period seems lighter this month and some clots, but not more painful than usual. If anyone can help reassure me please leave a post. Good Luck to all of you and I will definitely make a post follow up!!

Just went for a normal check-up today at my ob/gyn. Never expected to find out I had a 7cm dermoid cyst on my right ovary. They did blood work and I go for an MRI next week. She said I will need surgery to remove the cyst and possibly the right ovary. Has anyone else had surgery? How was it? How was the recovery? I had surgery about 12 years ago to remove a cyst and endometriosis. I was home the same day. This sounds like it could be a bigger surgery if she has to remove the ovary. I will keep everyone posted and I wish everyone the best of luck!

Hi, i had been feeling “fat” or bloated, super tired and had an overall tenderness in my lower belly for over 6 months. i thought i was just gaining weight and my periods were just bad as usual.

then two weeks (june 5) ago i experienced the most excruciating pain EVER while going to the bathroom (#1). after finishing i was doubled over in pain, literally fetal position on the bathroom floor. my husband checked up on me and got me into bed and started googling away – he said i might have an ovarian cyst or appendicitis. luckily i had my annual pap scheduled that wed. i was still in pain but sucked it up and went to work. the pain was everywhere on my lower belly but mainly on the left side.

at my pap i told my dr all my symptoms and she suspected i had an ovarian cyst and possible endo. she scheduled an ultrasound within an hour and by noon i found out i had a 4.1 cm cyst on my left ovary and a 1cm cyst on my right ovary. my CA-125 bloodwork came back slightly elevated at 44. she scheduled me for a follow-up ultrasound in 1 month.

however, 2 days later i called back saying i still feel pain and still bloated and heavy bleeding (from an earlier than expected period). i was going through one super tampon every hour. she had me come in the following monday for another checkup and ultrasound but also scheduled me for a laparoscopy. the earliest appt for surgery she had was three weeks later so i took it.

my follow-up ultrasound showed that the left cyst “resolved” itself but now i have a complex cyst on my right in addition to the first one that was already there. both are 2cm.

my bloating has gotten better, but i still feel abdominal pain and pressure. am just nervous now that i have a complex cyst. i’m 35, no children, but my husband and i would like the chance to have one. we had been trying for over a year unsuccessfully.

i’m hoping the surgery will clean out any endo i might have and remove all cysts. i’m worried since i haven’t ovulated yet – and it seems that i’m not ovulating normally…

thanks to all for sharing your stories – and good luck to everyone posting!

I am 41. Began having heavy periods for over 6 months with large clots. Had scheduled a pap test. That came back normal. On that visit I mentioned the clotting and the dr. ordered a U/S. Found a 2.2 x 2.1 complex cyst on my right ovary. CA125 came back negative and the pap normal. Repeat U/S one month out…which will be in 2 weeks. God Bless all of you woman. I to know what you are going through and am very worried. I am a mother of 4. I’m ready for them to take everything out. My father passed from Colon cancer in 09 and that evil disease has me worried. I have never had a cyst before. Never a abnormal pap. I did take hormones for fertility treatment for over 3 years before having twins in 1999. I later had two more children without treatment. I’m worried that those hormones have something to do with this. God Bless all of you going through this.

just wanted to post an update. i just had laprascopic surgery and had my two cysts removed (one complex, one in each ovary, about 4-5 cm). my dr noted afterwards that i had “extensive” lasering done due to the large amount of endometriosis found everywhere. but the dr did say it was not cancer – big relief to my and my husband!

i was released the same day and given very strong painkillers thru iv, and i also had a prescription for vicodin. i was out of it for the next two days and was taking the vicodin and ibuprofen altho not as often as prescribed. i was very tired and not too hungry. when i finally did wake up the pain was quite intense. i can only describe it like someone went into my lower belly and spend a week punching it. i was extremely sore and it hurt to roll over, let alone get up out of bed. thank goodness my husband was available to take care of me.

it’s been three days since my surgery and altho i feel much better i am still sore and can’t walk very fast. i’ve been trying to get up and move around so i can recover faster. i had my post-op appt yesterday and my dr recommended i return back to work on thursday. i think i might be able to return sooner but i’m going to take it one day at a time. i’m pretty self sufficient now, can get my own water and go to the restroom without help. the last thing i’m working on is a bowel movement. i haven’t had one since before the surgery (4 days now!), so i took some milk of magnesia hoping for relief in the morning.

i am also still feeling the sharp shoulder pain from the gas and i am still bloated in the lower belly. i was actually swollen/bloated all over but it’s gotten better. even if i were able to return to work i wouldn’t be able to wear anything professional…

God bless you all and best of luck to you ladies! please post updates!

I’m 22 years old and spent three days in the hospital for kidney stones just two weeks ago. After about a week I was still having pain so went in for a follow up where they did a ct. Scan which revealed a complex cyst. Had an ultrasound four days ago to determine what type of complex cyst it is but still have not received any results. Its hard not to worryand stay positive when there’s so much negative info online to read. Thank you all for posting your stories! Wishing you all the best.

    Hi,
I had some pain back in March in my right lower abdominal area on my way home from work. I went to my doctor the next day and she ordered an ultra sound and urine test. The urine came back positive for white blood cells, so she put me on antibiotics and by the time I had my ultra sound (2 weeks later)everything was normal. About 2 months ago I started having pain again and this time went to a gyn. She did a quick manual exam and said it was not gyn related. I went to urgent care the next day and they told me they thought th pain was related to my ovaries. I then went to the GI doctor the next day and he ordered and US. They found a cyst on my right ovary 1.9cm. The radiologist said it was probably hemmorragic, and to come back in 3-4 weeks. I just had my Ultra sound the other day and I saw a new gyn. I had my papsmear but no results yet and apparently the cyst is now a complex cyst. They want me to get an MRI. I am very concerned because I have never had cysts before and I am 40 years old. Does anyone have a similar situation?

I too am 15 years old. I went to my family doctor about 4 months ago because i had experienced 2 extremely painful periods. Went to the ER and they told me it was just cramps which pissed me off because i know what cramps feel like and these were not cramps. I have a high pain toleramce and i was rolling on the ground screaming and sweating. Ugh it was horrible. Anyways my family doc sent me to an obgyn and she did a pelvic ultrasound. Turns out i have a 3.5 cm simple cyst on my right ovary and a complex mass/cyst on my left ovary. She said that there was solid components in it which kind of worries me. She put me on birth control to see if the mass has shrunk. I go back two days from now to determine if i need surgery. Im worried because not only do i have pain, im always bloated, i pee alot, low back pain, indigestion which ive never had before and i had abnormal bleeding last week and i started my period yesterday. So of course im worried and think cancer but know that its extremely rare at my age! Any feedback would he great!

I’ve been having a long period and a lot of spotting, I was diagnosed with 2 simple cysts on my left ovary in February, they gave me bc pills but didnt work. The doctor said they might go away by themselves, i also have a fibroid which the doctor told me i should have surgery to remove it and the cysts, but he said if i want to have children do it but if not normally they dont give any problems.Yesterday i went for an ultrasound and they told me i have a very big complex cysts, i asked the nurse practioner if it could be something bad and she said yeah. I’m terrible scared, tomorrow i have an appointment to talk to the doctor about it. Please pray for me, i’ll be praying for everybody.

    Hi Ladies,

So happy i found this site where people who understand can hear my story. I am currently 18 years old and two years ago i was at school and dropped to my knees with excruciating pain, i didn’t think that much of it because i have always had extremely painful and irregular periods. My mum came and got me from school and i started screaming in the car so she took me to hospital, they gave me a shot of morphine and i fell asleep. After an ultrasound they found an 8cm cyst which had twisted my entire ovary so they sent me to see a Gynochologist.

The first thing the gyno said was ‘let’s take it out tomorrow.’ this shocked me. So she laid me down on the bed in her office and conducted an ultra sound and then determined the cyst had gone. I kept returning to the doctor numerous times for the past two years with pain and they put me on the pill and said it was period pain. January 5th this year was the last time i had my period, obviously worried i went to the doctor.

Two weeks ago i went into hospital in mass pain. Turns out i have a complex cyst on my right ovary which has been there for the past two years and it’s endimetriosis as it runs in my family. So now I am mostly infertile as i no longer ovulate at the age of 18 with a giant complex cyst on my ovary. It will be taken out next week and they will then check for endimetriosis to figure out the reasons i’m not ovulating.

So ladies, you all know your own body and know if something is wrong. Don’t let it go under the table, irregular periods are constantly looked over. better to be safe than sorry, good luck to all of you! xoxo

Just found out today that my 16 yr old has a complex cystic mass. It’s the size of an average orange, and it’s been very painful for her, and the doctor said she will need to have surgery to take care of it. It only started hurting a lot a few days ago, so maybe it grew enough, or started to twist. Need to find out if it’s cancerous, or not. We’re all worried at this point…her cousin had a tumor the size of a basketball which ended up being Lymphoma cancer about 10 years ago….she’ in remission for the last 7 years.
